Derived Cetane Number

  • Method ASTM D6890
  • Repeatability 0.0465x(ID-2.432)
  • Reproducibility 0.0777x(ID-0.7679)
  • Blending non-linear
  • Additive Correction Yes

This automated laboratory test method covers the quantitative determination of the ignition characteristics of conventional diesel fuel oil, oil-sands based fuels, hydrocarbon oils, blends of fuel containing biodiesel material, diesel fuel oils containing cetane number improver additives.

This method was developed as an alternative to Cetane Number to measure combustion properties. It uses a cylinder that is heated and pressurized to combust the diesel. The time it takes from the injection of the diesel to the moment it combusts is used to calculate an equivalent Cetane number.
