Ethanol Purity and Denaturant Content

  • Method ASTM D5501
  • Repeatability variable, see method
  • Reproducibility variable, see method
  • Blending non-linear
  • Additive Correction No

The purpose of this test is to determine the ethanol content of hydrocarbon blends containing greater than 20% ethanol. This method is applicable to denatured fuel ethanol, ethanol fuel blends, and miASTM Dlevel ethanol blends.

Pure ethanol is required to be denatured per state and federal laws due to taxation purposes. The purpose of this test is to ensure that fuel ethanol products (in accordance with D4806) contain the right amounts of denaturant. This denaturant prevents the product from being used in in the food industry due to their toxicity when being consumed.

The method is performed by gc fid to identify the contaminates in the ethanol.
