Smoke Point of Kerosene and Jet Fuel

This method is uses a scale to determine the smoke point of kerosene and jet fuel relative to known fuel standards. It is important to characterize how much smoke and soot producing properties the fuel has. A fuel that is high in soot/smoke production can lead to increased down time and possible failure due to excessive carbon build up in turbine engines. In general the higher a fuels aromatic content is the more smoke and soot production potential it has. However a fuel high in aromatics can be treated to improve the smoke point by a process called hydro treating. It is the process of saturating the aromatic rings with additional compounds to convert the aromatic to a saturate group known as napthenes.

The method is performed by filling up an adjustable candle with the sample to be tested while a wick is soaked in the same fuel. Once the wick is saturated it is fitted into the top portion of the candle and trimmed to an even edge. The candle is then assembled and placed into a lantern that contains a viewing window and measurement gauge. The wick of the candle is then lit and allowed to burn. This candle is then adjusted up and down to change the flame shape and length until the flame emits a small smoky wisp above it. This measurement is known as the smoke point which is the length of the wick in mm.
