Sulfur by Energy Dispersive X-Ray

The purpose of this test is to determine total sulfur in petroleum and petroleum products that are single-phase and either liquid at ambient conditions, liquefiable with moderate heat, or soluble in hydrocarbon solvents. These materials can include diesel fuel, jet fuel, kerosene, other distillate oil, naphtha, residual oil, lubricating base oil, hydraulic oil, crude oil, unleaded gasoline, gasohol, biodiesel, and similar petroleum products.

The method uses energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry to quantify the total sulfur. Similar to the D2622 a sample cup that that contains a clear film window is filled with fuel and placed into the instrument. The instrument then subjects the sample to x-rays which excite the sulfur and a detector on the other side of the reflection reads the interaction. This is then converted to a ppm or weight percent result basis the calibration. This method is generally used for higher sulfur products due to the lower precision in comparison to D2622.0
