This test method covers the determination of water in the range from 0 to 25 % volume in petroleum products, tars, and other bituminous materials by the distillation method.
The method is performed by adding sample and a solvent carrier that is not water soluble to a round bottom distillation flask (The solvent varies depending upon the type of sample to be analyzed). A graduated water trap is then connected to the top of the round bottom flask and placed in a heating unit. A condenser is then added to the top section of the receiver and the heating is started. Once the product heats up the carrier solvent water mixture will vaporize and travel through the receiver and up the condenser. The condenser will then cool the vapors until they are converted back into liquid solvent and water which will fall down into the receiver. Since the solvent and water are not compatible the water will sink and sit on the bottom. This process continues until no more water is collected in the receiver. Once this point is reached the water content is then read and reported.
